ASUS N10 notebook/netbooks now available at Newegg
Now this was fast. Newegg is now carrying the new line of ASUS N10 notebooks featuring the Intel Atom processor. Although ASUS labels the systems as “notebooks”, we certainly know better don’t we? With an Intel Atom processor, a 10.2 inch display, and a price hovering around $600 dollars, this certainly smells and looks like a netbook. However, I can see why ASUS calls the N10 a notebook. Two of the three models available at Newegg have an more RAM, a larger hard drive, and NVIDIA graphics and are priced between $699 to $799 – a higher price point than a standard netbook system. Yet, all three models come with the same Intel Atom processor running at 1.6GHz. It seems the N10 straddles that fine line between a netbook system and a low end notebook.. and hence.. the notebook designation from ASUS.
Enough with that – here are the three models and their specs (courtesy of Newegg).
- Windows XP Home OS
- Intel Atom N270 processor
- 10.2 inch WXGA display
- 1GB DDR2 RAM
- 160GB HDD
- 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi
- Intel Integrated Graphics
- Integrated Sound
- Built-in speakers
- 3 cell lithium ion battery
- Price of $599
Moving up the list, there’s the ASUS N10J-A1:
- Windows Vista Home Premium
- Intel Atom N270 processor
- 10.2 inch WXGA display
- 2GB DDR2 RAM
- 160GB HDD
- NVIDIA GeForce 9300M graphics with 256MB memory
- Fingerprint reader
- 802.11n Wi-Fi
- Integrated Sound
- Built-in Speakers
- 6 cell lithium ion battery
- Price of $699
Finally, there’s the ASUS N10J-A2:
- Windows Vista Business or XP Professional
- Intel Atom N270 processor
- 10.2 inch WXGA display
- 2GB DDR2 RAM
- 320GBHDD
- NVIDIA GeForce 9300M graphics with 256MB memory
- Fingerprint reader
- 802.11n Wi-Fi
- Integrated Sound
- Built-in Speakers
- 6 cell lithium ion battery
- Price of $799
Here are some observations based on the pictures from Newegg:
- Keyboard looks sizable BUT that right shift key is placed in a horrible place (to the left of the up arrow)
- Looks like the NVIDIA models have an HDMI output
- Six cell battery models only available at $699 or higher
- The 10.2 inch screen doesn’t fill up the entire frame of the system which leads me to believe the system is larger than your typical 10 inch netbook
All three systems are in stock right now – I seriously doubt that they will disappear anytime soon. Unfortunately at these prices, it’s not a sure thing sale – especially in this economy. The NVIDIA based netbooks are an interesting proposition – if only for gamers out there. However, if you’re thinking about gaming, why would you want to game on a 10 inch screen and an Intel Atom processor? I can’t help but think the N10 is a contradiction in terms.
