Guide to upgrading memory and hard drive on the Lenovo IdeaPad S10
It’s extremely easy to upgrade the storage and memory capacities of the Lenovo IdeaPad S10 netbook. To do either upgrade, you’ll need to have a Phillips screwdriver on hand which will be used to remove the bottom panel from the netbook. If you’re planning to upgrade the hard drive, you’ll need a replacement 2.5 inch SATA notebook hard drive and if you’re upgrading the memory, you’ll need a single 667MHz DDR2 SO-DIMM memory module.
It’s important to note that the IdeaPad S10 comes with 512MB of memory soldered directly onto the motherboard. Thus if you order the 512MB version of the S10, you’ll have a single free SO-DIMM slot. If you get the 1GB version of the S10, you’ll have a 512MB SO-DIMM memory module occupying the slot. You can add a either a 512MB, 1GB, or 2GB memory module to the S10 but the netbook will only recognize up to a maximum of 2GB of memory.
To upgrade either or both components, you’ll need to remove the bottom panel from the S10:
Step 1: Turn the S10 over so the bottom is now face up. You’ll see a large panel held down by two small screws.
Step 2: Take your Philips screwdriver and remove the two screws holding down the panel. Once removed, you might need to gently pop off the panel.
Once the panel is removed, you’ll see something like this:
The hard drive occupies the left side of the picture and the memory slot is along the middle/right side of the picture.
Upgrade the hard drive:
To upgrade the S10 hard drive, make sure to have another 2.5 inch SATA HDD ready. I won’t be going over how to migrate the existing Windows XP OS to the new hard drive but all you need to do is image the existing 80GB HDD and install the image onto a new drive that’s at least as large if not larger.
Step 1: Assuming the back panel is now off, slide the existing SATA hard drive out of the slot. You don’t need to pull the black tab – just gently push the entire drive out of the SATA interface
Step 2: Now remove the hard drive bracket and drive from the S10. The space will look like this:
The hard drive and bracket looks as follows:
Step 3: You need to remove the hard drive bracket from the original SATA HDD. Remove the four screws holding the bracket in place and then remove the current drive. Make sure to place the original drive in a safe location.
Step 4: Now place the new 2.5 inch SATA (the one here is a 250GB drive which replaces the original 80GB drive) and place it inside the bracket. Make sure the drive is in the same orientation as the original and then screw the four screws back into the bracket – securing the drive in place.
Step 5: Place the drive back into the S10 and slide it into the SATA interface. If this is all you’re upgrading, simply screw the panel back into the place (those two screws will also keep the hard drive in place).
Upgrade the memory:
Step 1: There should be a free SO-DIMM slot. I there’s a memory module already occupying the slot, remove the memory module now. Take your new SO-DIM and slide it into the memory interface – making sure that the notch matches up
Step 2: Press the SO-DIMM memory module down until it locks into place
Step 3: Place the panel back into place and then boot up the netbook. Press F2 during the Lenovo splash screen to get into the BIOS to ensure that the system registers both upgrades.
That’s it! I hope this guide helps you get more out of your IdeaPad S10 netbook! Please share your comments in our forums
