UPEK announces Touch Strip TCS5 Fingerprint Sensor for netbooks and MIDs
If there’s one thing missing on current netbooks and Mobile Internet Devices, it would have to be biometric security features commonly found on higher-end consumer and business oriented notebooks. As more users leverage netbooks for business usage and access online cloud services, the need for security becomes all the more apparent.
Looking to solve this problem is UPEK with their newly announced Touch Strip TCS5 Fingerprint Sensor. Dubbed the “first biometric fingerprint solution”designed specifically for netbooks and MIDs, the TCS5 is optimized for compact, low-power devices. After all, you don’t want a biometric security device sucking away all of your power right?
Not only will the TCS5 help protect your system from unwanted users, the TCS5 when bundled with the upcoming Fingerprint Suite Starter Software solution will help store passwords for password-protected websites. With the swipe of your finger, the software will remember and replay passwords for these websites – something particularly important for netbook users who arguably will use more “cloud” services than other mobile users.
The Fingerprint Suite Starter software package will be available starting in March with support for Windows XP and planned support for Windows 7 Starter Edition. A Linux version will be available in the second half of 2009.
UPEK offers the TCS5 to OEMs and ODMs so hopefully we’ll see future netbooks and MIDs feature this biometric security device.
