Toshiba announces U.S. availability of mini NB205
If there was one company noticeably absent during the netbook revolution, it would have to be Toshiba. Sure they had a model out last year but few if anyone actually noticed it (especially since that model never really made it to the U.S.). Well folks – things are about to change as Toshiba announced today the U.S. availability of their new “mini NB205” mini-notebook system (a.k.a. netbook). The NB205 is a 10.1 inch netbook with (get this) a full-sized keyboard, a large touchpad, approximately nine hours of battery life, and a choice of colors including a texture finish. Not too bad for their first model in the U.S. right?
Let’s go over the major features and specs of the mini NB205:
- 10.1 inch diagonal widescreen TruBrite LED backlit display
- Full-sized QWERTY raised-tile keyboard
- Laptop-sized touchpad
- Hard Drive Impact Sensor for protection of the hard drive during daily use
- Sleep and Charge allows users to charge USB connected devices even when the netbook is turned off
- Windows XP OS
- Intel Atom N280 processor clocked at 1.66GHz
- 1GB DDR2 800MHz RAM upgradeable to 2GB
- 160GB HDD
- 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi
- 10/100 Ethernet
- Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
- Weighs at 2.9 lbs
- 6 cell battery with up to 9 hours of power
- One USB port with Sleep and Charge and two USB 2.0 ports
- Built-in webcam
- Speaker and microphone
- Toshiba PC Health Monitor
- RGB port
- Memory card reader slot
- Security Lock Slot
The Toshiba mini NB205 will be available in two configurations – the mini NB205-N310 and the NB205-N210.
mini NB205-N310:
- Texture finish
- Accenting chrome hinge
- Available in four metallic color finishes – Sable Brown, Frost White, Indigo Blue and Posh Pink
mini NB205-N210:
- Fusion Finish in Black Onyx cover and a sleek, flat keyboard with Black Matte finish
As for pricing – the new Toshibas are actually very competitively priced. The NB205-N310 has an MSRP of $399 while the NB205-N210 has an MSRP of $349. Both models will be available in late June.
AND finally, PC Magazine already has a hands-on article about the new Toshiba netbook here on their website. Here’s a quick blurb from the article:
“Since the Toshiba NB205 will be available in most brick-and-mortar stores and through online retailers, prices can potentially be even lower than the suggested one. It looks like Toshiba might have a contender in its hands.”
They even have a video of the NB205 on YouTube (below):
One final thought before we leave. You have to give Toshiba a bit of credit with the new NB205. Yes they’re late to the U.S. market but for what is effectively a version 1.0 product in the U.S. market, it’s a pretty darn good showing. You see…Toshiba gets it when it comes to netbook systems. People want something small; something cheap; something cool; and something that lasts a long time. Companies like HP and Dell could learn a thing or two from Toshiba. These two companies have released a number of netbook models now and they still can’t seem to get the one basic feature right – long battery life. Kudos to Toshiba.
