Verizon Wireless offering Buy Storm2 and get one Mobile Broadband device free deal
Now here’s an interesting deal for those of you who are Verizon Wireless customers or thinking about moving to the mobile carrier. Verizon is currently offering a deal where you can buy a BlackBerry Storm2 and get a select BlackBerry or Mobile Broadband Device for free. What makes this interesting of course is the selection of Mobile Broadband Devices you can choose from should you not be interested in a second BlackBerry handset. Those of you looking to get a new Mobile Broadband-enabled netbook could pick up a Gateway LT2016u netbook free with this deal.. OR you could opt for the Verizon Wireless MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot (should you already have a netbook at home). The Hotspot is a nice device to have because it lets you share that mobile broadband connection with up to 5 Wi-Fi enabled devices. Keep in mind of course that you’ll need to select a data plan for that second free device…
Samsung netbook with AMOLED display spotted
Above is a demo Samsung netbook spotted by the folks of Akihabara News and utilizing a 7 inch AMOLED display created by the folks in the Samsung Mobile Display group. The 16:9 display has a resolution of 1024 x 600 with a brightness of 300 cd/m2 and an insane contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. Unfortunately given the price of AMOLED displays, it’s highly unlikely you’ll actually see one on a netbook anytime soon – at least not one the regular consumer could easily afford.
ComputerWorld reviews dual-booting Acer Aspire One D250
I came across another review (albeit a short one) of the new dual-booting Acer Aspire One D250 netbook featuring both Windows XP and the Android OS – this time from the folks at ComputerWorld here on their website. The focus of the review is of course mostly on Android since if you are to remove the OS, this is otherwise a nondescript netbook that looks like any other netbook out there.
Here’s an excerpt from the review:
“Another big disappointment for me is the lack of useful software out of the box. No word processor. No notepad. No file browser. Maybe I like tinkering with a portable too much, but to me those are all basic functions that I’ve come to expect with a netbook.”
and finally..
“While the company could correct the software letdowns, however, I’d still advise those with big hands to approach the D250-1613 with caution, or at least to test-drive it at a store first.”
Our advice to all of you out there? Unless you’re adventurous, stay away from this dual-booting netbook. The Android implementation is still too raw for most consumer usage and don’t get me started with the cramped keyboard. There’s plenty of better netbooks out there at reasonable prices.

If you had to get a new subsidized netbook from Verizon, our votes on the 311 purely because of the larger display and the ION graphics..

Intel to loosen hardware restrictions with upcoming Atom N470 processor
Intel is apparently set to loosen some of the hardware restrictions/guidelines placed on the Atom processor platform with its upcoming Atom N470 processor. Due to arrive in March of 2010, systems employing the N470 will be permitted to have up to 2GB of RAM and 160GB hard drives (or 20-32 GB Solid State Drives).
In another interesting twist, Intel is suggesting system vendors install Moblin as an OS for netbook systems (although Windows XP Home and Windows 7 are still allowed of course). Intel also recommends vendors shoot for suggested prices between $299 to $349 for these systems.
So is this really a big deal? For most consumers probably not, since most netbooks can be upgraded post-sale to 2GB of RAM anyhow. However, these restriction changes will allow vendors to pre-configure netbooks with 2GB of RAM instead of the standard 1GB of RAM making life far easier for consumers at the end of the day.
