Toshiba NB100 netbook goes on sale in Japan
The New York Times is reporting that Toshiba’s new NB100 netbook went on sale over the weekend in Japan and will be coming to Europe shortly. The system being sold in Japan has a price range of $677 to $740 dollars and has an Intel Atom processor, an 8.9 inch display, 120GB HDD, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Windows XP Home. Europeans will see a larger hard drive (160GB) with prices expected between $461 and $508 U.S. dollars.
Toshiba is also planning to release an Ubuntu version of the netbook with half the memory of the Windows XP models and a 120GB HDD. Unfortunately, Toshiba is not planning to release the NB100 here in the U.S.
Linux Format plays with the Toshiba NB100 netbook
The folks at Linux Format recently had a visit from Toshiba and got a chance to play with the new Toshiba NB100 netbook system. You can see their first look at the NB100 here on their team blog site (where it’s put right next to an Acer Aspire One netbook). Here’s an excerpt from the posting:
“But where the NB100 differs from other netbooks, however, is in the design. Toshiba is focusing this device on business users, with the result being a boxy (but sturdy) construction that looks like a shrunk-down ’serious’ laptop. Strangely, the device ships with a 4-cell battery that sticks out of the back — and Toshiba doesn’t have plans for other battery sizes.”

Reviews of the MSI Wind and the Toshiba Satellite NB100
Here are a couple of new reviews for you to check out today. First up, the folks at AfterDawn.com have a new review up on the MSI Wind U100 netbook. While there’s no verdict, the site does list several pros and cons for the netbook. For pros, the U100 has “pretty fast start-up, good keyboard and touchpad, extremely powerful and longlasting battery”, while the cons include “Wi-Fi range, no scrolling on the touchpad, size, and hiccups in high load browsing”.
The second review comes from the folks at TrustedReviews where they managed to get their hands on a Toshiba Satellite NB100 netbook. Here’s what they had to say about the NB100:
Thus, if you want a no frills netbook at a no frills price, the Satellite NB100 could be a very good option.
Toshiba NB110 netbook to hit Japan first
Thanks to CNET’s Crave web site, we’ve got some additional clarity into Toshiba’s first new netbook - the NB110 (which we’ve reported in the past as the NB100). The specs to the NB110 include the following:
- Intel Atom processor (but of course)
- 1GB RAM
- 120GB HDD
- Wi-Fi support
- Bluetooth 2.1 support
- Three USB 2.0 ports
- Windows XP
- Weight of 2.3 lbs
Unfortunately, the NB110 doesn’t appear to be coming to the U.S. anytime soon. A Toshiba rep at Ceatec said the netbook will be available first in Japan at the end of this month for around $660 and then later in Europe and other Asian countries. As for the U.S., the rep stated “The market is just not right yet”. Could he really mean “there are too many competitors right now?”
Toshiba enters the netbook fray with the Satellite NB100
Everyone.. please welcome Toshiba to the netbook parade! The company will finally be entering the netbook market with their new Satellite NB100 system. The NB100 features nearly identical specs as other netbooks out on the market. These include:
- Intel Atom processor
- 1GB RAM
- 120GB HDD
- 8.9 inch display with 1024 x 600 resolution
- Built-in Wi-Fi
- Ethernet
- 0.3 megapixel webcam
- Choice of Linux or Windows XP
The battery life is supposedly 3 hours and 47 minutes (seems very exacting eh?) which makes me believe it’s a 4 cell battery perhaps? The netbook will be coming out in three colors - Cosmic Black, Champagne Gold and Bright Silver with availability sometime in October for a price of £260.
