Intel introduces Atom N470 processor clocked at 1.83GHz
Intel pumps up the speed of the Atom Pinetrail platform with today’s introduction of the Atom N470 processor. Clocked at 1.83GHz, the Atom N470 becomes the highest clocked Atom processor for netbooks yet.
The N470 comes with 512k of L2 cache, DDR2-667 support, and of course, integrated graphics built directly into the CPU.
Intel expects major OEMs to introduce systems based around the new processor over the coming months.
Intel to loosen hardware restrictions with upcoming Atom N470 processor
Intel is apparently set to loosen some of the hardware restrictions/guidelines placed on the Atom processor platform with its upcoming Atom N470 processor. Due to arrive in March of 2010, systems employing the N470 will be permitted to have up to 2GB of RAM and 160GB hard drives (or 20-32 GB Solid State Drives).
In another interesting twist, Intel is suggesting system vendors install Moblin as an OS for netbook systems (although Windows XP Home and Windows 7 are still allowed of course). Intel also recommends vendors shoot for suggested prices between $299 to $349 for these systems.
So is this really a big deal? For most consumers probably not, since most netbooks can be upgraded post-sale to 2GB of RAM anyhow. However, these restriction changes will allow vendors to pre-configure netbooks with 2GB of RAM instead of the standard 1GB of RAM making life far easier for consumers at the end of the day.
